Good oral hygiene is important and not just for the sake of keeping your beautiful smile intact. Maintaining good oral […]

Good oral hygiene is important and not just for the sake of keeping your beautiful smile intact. Maintaining good oral hygiene can help prevent a number of medical and dental problems including gum infections and diseases, toothaches, loss of bone and most importantly, problem in chewing food. New studies also show that gum diseases can also be a potential cause for heart related diseases which makes it even more imperative for us to start taking care of our teeth from an early age.

Your teeth need care every single day of the week, so don’t think of postponing dental care for a day when you relatively more free time on your hands. It does not take a whole lot of your time, especially if you do it daily, while the benefit in terms of strong and healthy teeth can be hugely rewarding.

Below are some tips that can help you get started on a daily dental care regimen for enjoying healthy and shining teeth all through life.

Brush at least twice daily: You can prevent many tooth related issues by including this simple step as part of your daily routine. Brushing helps prevent build up acid within the mouth. Bacteria present in the mouth breaks down the food we eat to release acids which if not removed through brushing can eat away at the protective enamel coating of the teeth leaving it vulnerable to infection and breakage. Ensure that the first thing you do in the morning after waking up and the last thing you do in the evening before going to be is brush your teeth. Do not keep using the same brush for an unlimited period of time. Change your brush or the bristles on your brush periodically to ensure they can efficiently perform their job. When brushing your teeth, position the bristles at an angle of 45 degrees near the gum line. Both the gum line and the tooth surface should be in contact with the bristles. Use a soft brush and gentle back and forth motions to brush both outside and inside surfaces of the teeth. Lastly, brush the surfaces of your tongue and the roof of your mouth to remove bacteria, which might cause bad breath.

Floss at least once daily: Many people consider brushing a substitute for flossing and tend to ignore its importance. But brushing is not a substitute for flossing. This is because flossing daily can help reach food stuck deep between teeth that toothbrushes are unable to reach or dislodge. Food particles that find their place deep inside the gum do not get washed out by mouth rinse as well, the only way to remove food particles and prevent them from infecting the teeth is through flossing.

Use a fluoridated toothpaste: small quantity of fluoride consumed on a daily basis can help strengthen tooth enamel reducing the risk of decay due to infection or any other reasons. Ensure to use very small quantity of fluoride while brushing the teeth of very young children as too much of fluoride can cause white stains to appear on their teeth.

Avoid smoking: Everyone knows that smoking is injurious to health, what is lesser known is the fact that smoking can have very serious repercussions on dental health as well. When you smoke, flow of blood to the mouth is reduced increasing the probability of oral cancer and other periodontal problems. Also post dental care after surgery for smokers can prove to be longer and more prone to complications as smoking slows down and bone’s ability to heal itself.

Make healthy food choices: A healthy well balanced diet can go a long way in promoting overall good health, including strong and healthy teeth. Consuming a well-balanced diet on a daily basis can provide your teeth with nutrients and vitamins required to protect your teeth and fight off germs and bacteria. Including too much sugar and starch in your food on the other hand can cause acid build up in your mouth which in turn can be detrimental to the long term health of your teeth.

Avoid consuming too much alcohol, coffee and carbonated drinks: This is because these drinks contain high levels of phosphorus which reduce the body’s ability to absorb calcium, an important mineral required for strengthening teeth. Use straws while consuming sodas, this prevent soda from touching the teeth and helps prevent staining.

Use sealants to protect permanent teeth of your kids: Dentists recommend using sealants once permanent teeth start appearing to protect the teeth from decay and infections. A thin protective coating is applied on the chewing surfaces of permanent molars which ensures the teeth remain strong and healthy during the growing up years when sugar consumption from candies is maximum.

Use a mouth rinse after meals: Rinse your mouth regularly, especially after meals to prevent bad breath and tooth decay. Chewing sugar free gums also helps as it increases saliva in the mouth which reduces the acid build up in the mouth.

Schedule regular dental visits: Stick to your dental schedule to ensure regular cleaning and maintenance of teeth.

Lastly inculcate good oral hygiene habits in your children from an early age.

Pregnancy comes with a lot of responsibilities which includes taking good care of your health as well as the health […]

Pregnancy comes with a lot of responsibilities which includes taking good care of your health as well as the health of your unborn child. An often neglected or overlooked aspect of maintaining a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy revolves around oral hygiene. Many people assume that dentist visits are best avoided during pregnancy or that teeth do not need any special attention or care during pregnancy. The reverse is in fact true. Your teeth and gums are twice as susceptible to decay and infection during pregnancy than in normal conditions. This is because the body undergoes a host of hormonal changes during pregnancy leading to increased risk of infection in the teeth, gum diseases, bleeding and other oral problems. Any kind of infection in the teeth or gums can directly affect the health of the unborn child and increase the risk of premature delivery. Gum diseases also increase the possibility of giving birth to child with low birth weight.

If you are pregnant, it is in your interest to know more about how pregnancy can increase the risk of developing periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is in fact the medical term for bacterial infection in the mouth. Bacteria present in the mouth break down sugar in the food to produce acid, which can erode away the protective enamel coating on the tooth making it vulnerable to cavities and infections. This condition is also referred to as gingivitis and symptoms include bleeding and swelling in the gums. Pregnancy increases the risk of developing gingivitis mainly because hormonal changes during pregnancy create conditions for bacteria to grow which in turn increases the acid action on tooth enamel. Another reason why pregnant women are more susceptible to gingivitis is because acids released during morning sickness can also wear down the enamel coating on the teeth. It is important to treat gingivitis as soon as possible, especially during pregnancy. If left untreated, gingivitis can spread to other parts in the mouth increasing health risks for both the mother and the child.

Good dental care during pregnancy can eliminate unnecessary complications during and after pregnancy and allow you to give birth to a healthy baby the normal way. A few simple tips and tricks can help you keep your mouth in perfect order during pregnancy.

The first thing to remember during pregnancy is that you should continue your routine dental visits. Dental visits are important during pregnancy in order to maintain oral health and you should take more care than normal to ensure you keep your regular scheduled appointments.

Make sure you inform your dentist about your pregnancy. Also keep your dentist informed about the name and dosage of any medication including pre vitamins that you are currently taking. Also keep your doctor informed if you have any special pregnancy related condition so that he can take it into consideration while preparing your dental plan.

Bear in mind that routine dental procedure like teeth cleaning or cavity filling can be safely done during pregnancy. In fact it is highly recommended that you take care of these during pregnancy to reduce the risk of gum and teeth infection.

Routine X-rays can also be performed during pregnancy provided the abdomen and thyroid are properly covered with a leaded apron and collar respectively. There is, therefore, no reason, to delay those.

You might be aware that your baby will start growing teeth sometime during the second trimester of pregnancy. It is important that you provide the baby with sufficient amount of calcium, proteins as well as vitamins, especially vitamins D, C and A. Sticking to a healthy diet that includes dairy products, yogurt and cheese will not only help you fight tooth decay but also provide essential nutrients to help the baby grow strong teeth and gums.

It is normal to eat more during pregnancy but it is best to avoid frequent snacking as that is the most common cause of tooth decay. Also avoid sugary drinks and snacks as much as possible during pregnancy as they facilitate the growth of bacteria in the mouth.

If you are suffering from morning sickness during your first trimester of pregnancy, chances are it might be getting aggravated when you brush your teeth. Many pregnant women put off brushing teeth in the morning due to morning sickness. Instead replace your normal toothpaste with one tastes bland to reduce chances of morning sickness.

Rinse your mouth frequently with fluoridated mouth rinse, especially after a bout of vomiting. That will help prevent bacteria from growing in the mouth.

Above all practice good oral hygiene habits by brushing and flossing regularly. These seemingly simple tips can go a long way in keeping you as well your yet to be born, little bundle of joy, in good health.

Cumberland Dentistry always welcome new patients who are ready to receive best dental care from the dentist in Crossville and Monterey. We have a skilled and expert dental hygienist to make your visit as comfortable as possible and educate patients and pregnant women about importance of dental care during pregnancy to eliminate unnecessary complications.

Neglecting an oral hygiene and proper dental care leads to numerous types of dental diseases that can in turn become one of the symptoms of heart disease, strokes, bone loss, infection and dental gum issues. For this it is vital to get ourselves educated on the routine oral cleaning treatments and use of proper antiseptic dental ointments to get a healthy dental life.

Halitosis that includes suffering from a frequent bad breath can cause a serious dental condition. It is one of the symptoms of gum diseases, dry mouth, oral cancer, deep cavities or an oral bacterial infection on the tongue. While facing these kind of oral issues and covering up the bad breath with frequent mouthwash and neglecting the oral problem will not stop the bacteria from multiplying and will just mask the wired oral odor. It is recommended for people to take the help of the dentist to avoid the bad breath causing other oral disease at large and to get consultancy on the perfect tooth ointments to be used for your oral problem.

Tooth decay and deep cavities have turned to be the second most prevalent disease in the USA. The infected tooth enamel needs proper care and treatment to prevent extensive tooth pain and tooth damage which is caused due to the plague and the sticky substance stuck on the teeth blending with the sugary beverage we consume. For this, regular dental checkups with daily flossing, tooth brushing twice a day and avoiding sugary snacks and drink are the best way to maintain and sustain anti-cavity oral health. Furthermore, frequent visits to the experienced Dental Surgeon or Endodontist is recommended to avoid dreadful oral problems after the cavities are detected.

Gum disease is said to be one of the symptoms of heart strokes. A bacterial infection in the gums causes periodontal disease also. This type of oral disorder is prevalent in adults that results in the tooth loss due to severe gum infection. Gingivitis and Periodontitis are the two major challenging stages that needs an immediate treatment to cure the gum disease. To avoid such kind of gum disease, one should clean the teeth daily and indulge in regular dental test to avoid tooth extraction and oral pain.

A frequent sore throat is one of the symptoms of mouth cancer, tongue cancer and throat cancer. An experienced dentist is the prime line of defense to locate the first stage of oral cancer. Regular visits to periodontist and dental expert can save you from oral cancer if detected early.

Bothersome and pesky mouth sores are common among people who are not so particular in maintaining proper dental hygiene. It is easily cured with proper dental antiseptic ointments as recommended by the dentist you visit for regular check ups. Canker sores, cold sores, fever blisters, sores due to thrush and ulcer are major mouth sores which needs to be tackled and regularly tested by orthodontist and should also get regular consultation of pedodontist especially for the kid’s oral health.

Having a traumatic injury in the mouth or teeth and jaw joint problem is frequent in the athletes and hyperactive children. A regular visit to Prosthodontist can give a quick fix with proper dental care as per the prescription. Apart from dental injuries, if a person wants to get rid of snoring or fast recovery after getting dental treatment for oral cancer needs systematic dental consulting services and regular dental check ups.

Tooth erosion, tooth cracking and high sensitivity in the teeth are the cause of neglecting dental check up.

Certain dental emergencies and toothaches turns out to be very scary and painful until you get proper dental treatment. For this, one of the temporary universal remedy to ease the discomfort is maintaining oral hygiene on a daily basis. This also accounts for a proper oral treatment from the expert dentistry and routine dental advice to get a good oral life.

Brightening your life with a perfect smile has now become a trend that is tackled by a dentist with technological developments every other day. After the dental implants, tooth whitening and other cosmetic dental treatments, one should follow routine dental visits to curb the oral bacterial infection and strengthen oral immunities.

Do you have bad breath? What about red swollen gums that bleed? If so, then you’re more than likely to have what’s called gum disease which is also called periodontal disease. The scary truth about this disease that it’s linked up to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and many other health risks! So the earlier you catch it, the better the outcome.

Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria left behind by food that affects the tissue that surrounds and support your teeth. This bacterium is also known as plaque, the white/yellowish sticky film that covers your teeth. Over time this plaque hardens into calculus also called tartar, which is only removed by the dentist or hygienist. Bacteria are forming under the calculus because floss or even a toothbrush cannot keep the gums clean. As a result, the bacteria are infecting your gums! Your body is trying to fight off this harmful infection, but this is a losing battle. Once your body is trying to fight off the infection you start to lose bone that hold your teeth in place. So what happens when there is few or no bone to hold a tooth in place? It can fall out! This is why we recommend that you get your teeth cleaned every six months. Some cases have cleanings every three or four months.

So let’s break it down:

(Food = Bacteria) (Bacteria = Plaque) (Plaque = Calculus) (Calculus = Infection) (Infection = Gum Disease) Gum Disease = Bone Loss) (Bone Loss = No Teeth)

Caring for gum disease is surprisingly simple depending on the severity level of the tooth, gums, and bone. Early stages are the red swollen gums that bleed when flossing or brushing. This stage is called Gingivitis. A professional cleaning along with excellent Oral Hygiene Care at home, flossing and brushing twice a day, will completely reverse the disease. Other stage of the disease is redder gums that also bleed, minimal calculus ( food that has become hard or calcified) has built up on the tooth near the gum line, and periodontal pockets measurement of four or more. A periodontal pocket is the area between the tooth and gum that the dentist or hygienist measure to see how much bone has been lost. Some people will lose a good portion of the bone and might even have to have some teeth extracted.

Healthy gums are supposed to look pink with periodontal pockets no higher than 3mm with no build up, calculus, tartar, plaque, or bacteria! The ones that care about their teeth and want to keep eating that delicious food will brush twice a day, floss at least once a day, and come to their 6 month check up. Not only do they get their teeth cleaned but also catch cavities at an early stage so they don’t lead to root canal or extractions.

Now remember, the sooner you get a check up the better! Thank you for reading and we hope that now you are aware of the outcomes that you’ll choose to save that gorgeous smile!
